Ultreia de St. Jacques 2012 ist ein Einzellagenwein von Raúl Pérez in der D.O. Bierzo. Der Mencia Weinberg, von dem der Ultreia de St. Jacques seine Trauben bezieht, ist 3.2 Hektar groß und wurde 1889 angepflanzt und liegt auf 537 m. Ultreia de St. Jacques zeigt mehr die jugendlichen, frischen und mineralischen Seiten der Mencia-Traube.
Die Trauben werden von Hand geerntet, Kaltmazeration mit 80 % der Stengel in 5000 L Fudern. Pigeage einmal tägich, bis die Fermentation einsetzt. Nach dem Ende der Fermentation wird das große Fuder mit einer Plastikfolie abgedeckt und dann beginnt die post-fermentative Mazeration, die mindestens 70 Tage dauert. Dann kommt der Wein in kleinere, 1500 L Fuder aus französischer Eiche, wo er noch mal 8 Monate reift.

The 2012 Ultreia St Jacques is a Mencía cuvée from different plots across Bierzo, part fermented in stainless steel, part in barrique and part in oak vats all with 100% full clusters. It shows some notes of coffee and a herbal side with echoes of raspberry leaf and wild berries. The medium-bodied palate offers refined tannins and good freshness. It's a great, approachable, very drinkable, commercial wine that used to be very good value.

Brilliant ruby. Asian spice-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by deeper suggestions of licorice, violet and musky underbrush. Appealingly sweet red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, with building notes of floral pastilles and smoky minerals adding complexity. The mineral quality resounds on the clinging finish, which leaves behind intense raspberry and floral pastille notes. This suave, Pinot-like wine, which was made from vines that were reportedly planted in 1889(!), was aged in a 1,500-liter French oak foudre for eight months.

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breitere Randaufhellung. Einladendes dunkles Waldbeerkonfit, zart nach Nougat und Dörrpflaumen, Kräuterwürze unterlegt. Mittlerer Körper, feine Fruchtsüße, integrierte Tannine, mineralischer Nachhall, etwas schlank im Finale, vielseitig einsetzbar.
