Seit 2001 stellt Alvaro Palacios mit dem Corullon im nordwestspanischen Anbaugebiet D.O. Bierzo einen der hochklassigsten Weine aus der Rebsorte Mencia her. Palacios ist im Bierzo Pionier und Referenz zugleich. Fein und finessenreich, ist dieser Wein eine adäquate Antwort auf den mächtigen Paixar von Mariano García. Ein Wein, den man probiert haben sollte !!
Der Corullon wird im großen Fuder (tino) vergoren und danach 17 Monate in französischer Eiche ausgebaut.
Im Jahre 1998 gründete der spanische Weinmacher Álvaro Palacios, der bereits im katalanischen Anbaugebiet Priorato mit seinen Weinen Les Terrasses, Finca Dofí und L'Ermita furiose Erfolge gefeiert hatte, im Bierzo seine Bodega Descendientes de J. Palacios und stellt dort reinsortige Weine aus der einheimischen Rebsorte Mencia her. Neben dem Zweitwein Petalos del Bierzo und dem Erstwein Corullón gibt es mittlerweile fünf Einzellagenweine Las Lamas, San Martín, Fontelas, Moncerbal und La Faraona, die in Miniauflagen zwischen 500 und 2000 Flaschen hergestellt werden.
In einer Blindprobe würde man die Provenienz der hochklassigen Mencía - Weine wahrscheinlich eher im Rhônetal oder Burgund, denn in Spanien vermuten.
Die amerikanischen Weinzeitschrift "Wine-Enthusiast" hat der Ausgabe September 2009 die 10 besten Weine Spaniens gekürt: Entscheidend für die Auswahl der Weine sei nicht der aktuelle Jahrgang, sondern die Beständigkeit im Laufe der Jahre. Bewertet wurde nur aktuelle Jahrgang, bei Corullon war das 2006. Weiterhin wurden unter die Top-10 gewählt: Numanthia 2006, Vega Sicilia Unico 1998, Rodas Cirsion 2005, Pazo de Señorans 2008, Gramona Tres Lustros 2001, San Vicente 2005, Malleolus 2005, Lustau Almacenista Palo Cortado 1/50 und Finca Dofi 2006.

The purple-colored 2006 Villa de Corullon offers up a super-fragrant bouquet of lavender, incense, black cherry, and black raspberry. Elegant and multi-dimensional on the palate, it has gobs of ripe fruit, succulent flavors, and impeccable balance. It has several years of aging potential and should offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2021. This estate was founded in 1998 by Alvaro Palacios. It has steep hillside vineyards ranging in age from 60 to 100 years planted to 100% Mencia, the indigenous grape of cool-climate Bierzo.

Alvaro Palacios may be the betterknown name behind the Descendientes de J. Palacios label in Bierzo, but equally if not more responsible for Villa de Corullon and several other superb Mencia-based wines is his nephew. Ricardo Perez Palacios, who oversees the duo’s vineyards in the area and also runs the winery in Villafranca de Bierzo. Formed as a joint venture in 1998, Descendientes, which honors Alvaro’s late father (Ricardo’s grandfather), has led the decade-long resurgence that has transpired in Bierzo, a small but high-potential D.O. located in northwest spain. And the heart of Bierzo is the town of Corullon, which is surrounded by precipitous hillside vineyards planted to mencia. Villa de Corullon, the most ethernal and balanced wine being made in Bierzo; is a blend of 200 parcels totaling about 75 acres. The Palacios teams uses only old-vine fruit for this wine, which is unique in flavor, mouthfeel and balance. More food-friendly than just any othe spanish wine, the ’06 features bright fruit, fine acidity, elegance, floral aromas and flavors, and subtleties that may sometimes be lacking in Tempranillo and most other Spanish red grapes.
